Letterpress Printing

For over the past month I have been learning new printing skills in the form of letterpress.

I have just one more workshop to go before I can show off the end results. In the meantime look out for my first month of DYCP in photos in my next blog post or, find me online @iamsophiegibson.

Last month Arts Council England announced the successful applicants for Round 2 of 'Developing Your Creative Practice'. ACE made 111 awards in Round 2 from 965 eligible applications. I was one of the 111 applicants awarded a grant.
BIG thanks to Arts Council England & good luck to everyone else awarded a grant and to all those thinking about applying.

Whilst studying in Sweden and drinking lots of cider I visited the Moderna Museet in Stockholm and witnessed the greatest Andy Warhol exhibition in my lifetime so far: Other Voices Other Rooms.

This Week

This week I have been in Cyprus, Athens and Burnley. It was possibly the first trip I have ever taken without a 35mm camera. I therefore relied on my cute little digital compact which is a babe of a camera in all fairness but it just isn't the same....

Solo Exhibition Earlier This Year

The Burnley I. II, III
mixed media

At the beginning of the year I had a solo exhibition at Towneley Hall in Burnley. Such a fantastic venue and opportunity. If you missed it, there is a short film on my website.

Royal Academy 6/7/08

I remember drawing this, sat on a sculpture in front on the Royal Academy on a very hot day. I had my fisheye camera so I can see the photos in my head that I took that day. I also remember walking across a bridge and stopping to take photos on my other film camera, I had my Diana loaded with 120 b&w film. I can't remember the last time I drew something like this.

Studio Visit

Today I tagged along to Manchester on a double decker bus, walked to Salford, made my first and perhaps sadly last visit to ATELIER. It was grand, and I liked it.

Artist Jai Redman is currently working his way though his entire collection of work with archivist and artist Fi Kay. There is just 3 weeks until the studio closes it's shutters for the last time before property developers erase it's physical form.

As an artist I've visited my fair share of art spaces in the city and this has been one of the nicest. To think that I may have never visited at all is a sad feeling, but I did visit and I'm looking forward to the future of Redmans' plans #BurnleyIsMyBerlin

What I'm working on

I love this blurry photo but hopefully not as much as I like the work itself. I'm currently working on a set of 10 artworks for a submission. I have 6 of the 10 ready to glue with the rest mentally prepared.

I'll keep you posted and be sure to upload full images with more detail behind my thinking.

Aside from this I'm working on a few applications and off to Stockport this weekend to drop work off at this years Stockport Open Exhibition. Hopefully I won't be collecting it anytime soon....

EAST BERLIN

I went to Berlin for the second time earlier this year and entirely loved it. Balls crossed I took more photos on my 35mm....

Earlier this month

Before I can no longer say "earlier this year...".

Around my birthday I escaped town and went to the big smoke to get cultured for a few days. Here are some snaps that absolutely do this exhibition no justice by Lee Bull at the Hayward Gallery, London. I really encourage a visit as this exhibition is one of a kind. If you don't already know about Lee Bull you should do, she's fascinating.

P.s
Every now and then I will state this but I mean it this time, I will post more often. If I'm not posting here there's a small lazy chance I'm posting on Twitter or Instagram @iamsophiegibson.

Commission Finished

Last year I was commissioned to create artwork in response to the heritage and history of Burnley Mechanics. I can now say that that work is done and handed over.

I'll post about the process of making that work over the next few weeks HERE

Onions and Leeks

'Burnley food control committee
FOOD! FOOD!! FOOD!!!
Great meeting for Women, Mechanics' Institution, Burnley....'

If your from Burnley you will know all about the Burnley Mechanics, but did you know that there was once a whole lecture about onions and leeks!?. This has to be one of my favourite of the lectures that I've found whilst carrying out my research on the history of the Building!
