I found this old statement whilst looking for a 'proper' one.... sometimes I come across things I've written years ago and can't believe I wrote them; like the last page of my dissertation where I call Damien Hirst an 'arse hole' and mention something about feeling violated if ever was to read a book about him ( I've just checked the bookshelf and I now own five)
SOPHIE GIBSON
The usual justification
given to back my work up is that it revolves around modern society and
throwaway culture (which it does). Also focusing on corporate selling culture.
When I work in collage majority of my images are reused from unwanted
publications, i.e.- dumped magazines and newspapers etc. It feels like such a
waste that all these amazing images get publish and then thrown.
So that is where my
original pulse for working in collage came from after always being a painter.
With working in the medium that I do it’s hard to come up with a pre-conceived idea
from relaying on found images. Id say it’s almost like a ‘happening’- epithany
(in the most un arsehole way possible) it just happens. I start to look at what
I have to work with and some unconscious meaningful concept appears.
At the end of it all I just
want the viewers to enjoy it.
